Sperm whales are often seen in groups (called pods) of about 15 to 20 animals. Pods contain females and their young, while males may roam solo or move from group to group. Females and calves reside year-round in tropical or subtropical waters and apparently practice communal care. Males migrate to higher latitudes, alone or in groups, and return to the equator to breed.
