The White House is the presidential residence of the United States of America, located in northwest Washington DC at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The house was decidedly built in 1790 and President George Washington and city planner Pierre L'Enfant chose the site together. The architect was chosen in a competition with James Hoban as the winner, and the first building block was laid in October 1792.

James Hoban's design was based on Leinster House, a Dublin palace, now the seat of the Irish Parliament. The house's current name was first used by Theodore Roosevelt in 1901.

The first time a president lived in the house was in 1800. In 1814, the house burned, leaving only the outer walls, but the house was rebuilt.
